Dundee City Centre
Fancy a trip to Dundee for some "Real Ale"?
Here's a wee wander you can have --- all times are approximate.
If arriving by bus/coach at Seagate bus station, exit by the doors at the end of the main concourse, cross the side road (Trades Lane) and proceed along Seagate for 5min. to a former cinema/Wetherspoons --- The Market.
Normally 2 changing ales.
Turn left on leaving, cross the road and go right at Tickety Boo's (nice bar, but no cask ale), and head up Commercial St*, pass The Barrelman, turn left and pass The McManus art gallery & museum to come to The Counting House (10min), a former bank, now our Wetherspoons.
Abbot Ale & Belhaven 80/- + 3 changing ales.
Leave by the side door, turn left and carry on until you enter the pedestrian precinct, at "Boots" cut diagonally to your right to the top of Crichton St. where you will find our oldest pub --- The Pillars (5min).
2 changing ales with CAMRA discount.
On exit turn right down the hill, right into Whitehall Cres. at the bottom, cross Whitehall St., right into Union St. pedestrian area and the Star & Garter is on the right (5min).
Again 2 changing ales with CAMRA discount.
Right on exit, and at the top of the road on the left (3min), the branch’s "Dundee City PotY" for 2025 & 2026, The Bank Bar.
4 changing ales, quite often including brews from local MoR or Seventy One.
You may fancy "one for the road" in The Market on your way back to the bus station.
* When passing the bus stops on the left of Commercial Street, check for "xplore Dundee" bus No. 22, if one is due, hop on and go to Coldside (a 5 ways junction), and visit Frews - even if no ale is on, which is often the case, the lounge & saloon bars are worth seeing.
Don't be confused by the plough depicted in the stained glass - this was the original name of the pub.
The No.22 back will drop you off in Seagate and you can carry on with your amble.
If arriving by train, exit the station by the main doors, turn left and cross the dual carriageway, turn right facing the Malmaison and pass to the right of it (Dock St.) carry on along Dock St., past the Holiday Inn, until you come to Gelatly St., turn left and The Market is at the top (15min).
Continue as per bus arrivals.
I hope you have a good wander.
